Started hike after work on 7/3 at around 5 pm with only 3.5 hours of sleep. Watched the sunset behind Baldy at around 8 pm and reached the summit around 8:15. Set up camp, cooked dinner and watched fireworks below, even seeing the firework show as far away as Disneyland. It was a chilly and breezy night. Woke up to catch the sunrise around 530 am on 7/4/17. Headed back down and encountered LOTS of patriotically-dressed hikers headed up for a 4th of July summit!
Been wanting to do this hike and camp at the summit. I’ve seen conflicting reports regarding whether or not a permit is required for camping overnight. Is it the same permit as the day-use permit?
Additionally, are the self-serve day-use permits available before the ranger station opens? I’d like to start earlier than 7:00am if possible.
Thanks in advance.
