Peak Mt Baldy
Group N/A
Trailhead Manker Flats

My husband and I celebrated mother’s day by spending some quality time with Mother Nature. Today we finally summited the mountain I’d been admiring for years growing up–Mt. Baldy.

Despite setting several alarms, my husband and I got a late start. We hiked from Manker Flats up to Mt. Baldy notch (on foot–not using the ski lift). We tried to order some food at “Top of the Notch”, but they were having a special (and very expensive) Mother’s Day Brunch, so we took a short break and ate some snacks. From there, we took the Devil’s Backbone trail to the summit. I really liked the views from this trail! It was very windy and freezing though! I was wearing a base layer, windbreaker, and snow jacket, and yet I was shivering to my bone. Next time, I would definitely pack gloves and a beanie! There was definitely some snow at the top, but no need for microspikes. The views were amazing! I wish I had taken better photos/videos while at the peak, but what’s done is done.

The way down was a whole different story. We took the Baldy Bowl trail (Ski Hut trail). My husband and I both agree that we hated this trail because of the scree and how badly marked the trail is at parts. It took us way longer than anticipated.

If we did this hike again, we would definitely take the Devil’s Backbone both ways (with or without the ski lift)–we don’t care that it’s longer!
