Trailhead Chantry Flats

Hiked this peak with friends Tim and Aldrin on 04/29/17 with the promise of Oinkster pastrami and Populist IPA if we make it out in one piece. Left the truck from where we parked at 709am. The trailhead was long full by the time we got there. So as expected this was going to be a popular spot on a Saturday in April with perfect weather. The trail was busy but still really pleasant, mostly shaded throughout the ascent. The dozens of cabins along the way were really cool. They ranged from the well-kept weekend getaway (with decorations, planters, and porch furniture) to Jason Vorhees’ house. The USGS marker dated 1957 and the dams stamped “USFS 1960” were also interesting finds that prompted conversations of logistical challenges working out in the woods back in those days and earlier. Not easy. No silnylon, no titanium cookpots, no ultralight trekking poles, or dehydrated biscuits and gravy. Anyway, the ascent was continuous from Sturtevant Camp and mostly shaded, opening up to some sun exposure closer to the summit. Once we got to the top, there was a a car show or a car club rally of some kind. Lots of Corvettes. I took zero pictures of the cars because all I wanted was to refill my water bottle and a popcicle. After a short rest, it was back down via Winter Creek Trail. The trail was well groomed but there were orchards of poison oak through parts. Once we got across the foot bridge and back on pavement we slogged up the paved hill and down the road back to the truck with nothing but pastrami and beer on the brain. We made it back to the truck at about 245pm. On the way out I even saved my parking spot for a DUCKS fan (I know, right? Go Kings!). Maybe I’ve grown as a person or I REALLY just wanted to get to Eagle Rock to eat. It was probably the Pastrami. Peak 1 down. Til the next one…
