Peak Mt Wilson
Group N/A
Trailhead Chantry Flats

This hike was absolutely beautiful and taught my husband and I a lot about what it means to be prepared!

On the way up, we enjoyed the hike next to the creek, the waterfall, and Sturtevant Camp (where we enjoyed some hot cocoa). My husband even found a guitar and played for a little while. From Sturtevant Camp to the peak, there was a lot of snow–which we didn’t expect. We had never hiked in snow and, needless to say, were unprepared. In all honesty, there were some parts of the trail that were scary to cross because of the melting snow and issues with traction. I really wish at the time that I had microspikes or at least trekking poles. At the top we took a long break, enjoyed the views, made a small snowman, and refueled with another hot cocoa.

We did the Mt. Wilson loop, so we took a different trail down. The signs were really confusing–the trail we took down was signed as closed due to the winter weather–but other hikers were extremely helpful in guiding us in the right direction. Even though we had an early start to the hike, the winter sun set before we got back to our car, so we attempted to use our cell phones to light our way. Since then, we always make sure to bring our headlamps!

Next year if we complete the Six Pack again, we would definitely recommend doing this hike in January–it wasn’t too hot and flies weren’t an issue!
