Trailhead Upper Winter Creek Trail

We got to the trailhead at 6:20 a.m. and, miraculously, there were still a handful of parking spots left. I considered this a good omen for the day ahead. Trail conditions on the Upper Winter Creek were great, pretty chilly as the sun was rising, but it never got too hot. We found our route to be only lightly trafficked, and made it to the summit just before 10 a.m. We stuck it out in the chill until the cafe opened, then quickly began our descent, hot coffees in hand.

Headed back down on the Sturtevant trail, which was pretty congested by 10:30 or so. Connected to the Gabrielino Trail and had a nice, relatively quick descent. Definitely felt as if the trail marker distances weren’t very accurate, but we’re glad to have crossed one of the six peaks off the list!

When completing this hike last year, we first checked out the waterfalls before doubling back to the Gabrielino Trail. I found the Upper Winter Creek to be much more pleasant for the ascent and recommend this route for those who have already experienced the falls and lovely cabin area.
