    Hey all,

Just a quick update on the Ice House Canyon trail to Cucamonga Peak…

Went up yesterday, lots of snow, even below IHC Saddle. Doable in normal hiking boots/shoes, you might slip and slide a bit. Beyond the saddle, as usual, is a different story. We went with crampons and axes and was still slow going. The normal ‘trail’ is not visible, so it really amounts to you piecing together your own traverse in a lot of spots. We followed someone else’s tracks for a while, which did lead the correct way, but winds up and down quite a bit so we did some of our own trailblazing. We got to the Saddle between Bighorn and Cucamonga at 1pm. Judging by how long that had taken us (2 hours from IHC Saddle) we opted not to hit the summit, as that would have probably added another hour minimum, and we didn’t feel like traversing back around Bighorn as the snow hardened and iced up in the shade. An earlier start would have made the difference.

Anyways just a heads up, it’s steep and slick back there, and tons of snow. We both self arrested a couple simple falls descending some 45-50 degree slopes. It’s totally manageable but I would recommend an early start and crampons/axe for sure.

Will be back to close that one out, happy hiking!

For sure! Hope it was helpful. Just went back to the summit today and posted today’s conditions in my log…(exactly the same as last week 🙂

Thank you for a detailed update, I’m planning to go up on 4/22/17 with a group of 8-10, hopefully we can submit, if not I’m sure it’ll still be a fun hike

Summited Cucamonga Peak on 4/15/2017 with a group of 5 friends with trekking poles and wearing microspikes. It took us about 1 1/2 hour to navigate straight up the slope of 1000 ft uncharted path of snow to the peak. I’m assuming at least half of the snow would be gone in a couple of weeks.

Summited Cucamonga Peak on 4/29/17 – did not need microspikes as the snow was soft enough to grip with trail shoes. We lost the trail a few times but finally made it to the summit where the wind was much less intense. It was very cold and windy (started at 7:30 am from Ice House Canyon) total hiking time was 8 hours and 17 minutes.

Were there just patches of snow during your hike or long segments? Hoping to summit this Saturday. Thanks!

Hi Jesse, Conditions were epic. Little bit of snow on ground but no spikes needed just patches close to the peak. Clear blue skies.

Anyone interested in joining me to Hike Cucamonga Peak this Friday May 19th? I am not very fast (about 35 minute miles). I am hoping to be at the trailhead by 7:30am. You will need a permit and Adventure Pass.

Anyone gone within the last few days that can report whether the trail is doable or not? Planning on going up tomorrow the 20th. Thanks!
