KeymasterI’m hoping to hike this as an overnight backpack trip. This would be part of a loop that includes San Bernardino and San Gorgonio peaks. Thanks for the recon!

KeymasterWhen you get to the Sierra Club ski hut, you’ll see a sign posted explaining “no camping within xx feet” (I don’t recall the exact distance).
Jeff H
KeymasterBear in mind that there is no camping around the ski hut. And be sure to filter or treat water from the creek. 😉

KeymasterGenerally snow is not an issue until the end of November, depending on the storms that blow through. Of course, weather can change at any time, especially at altitude.
One of the resources I use to check weather forecasts at the summit is https://www.mountain-forecast.com —
It let’s you enter many peaks (i.e. San Gorgonio) and get the forecast at different elevations on the mountain. Check that in the days up to your hikes.

KeymasterHey Vipe! Welcome to SoCalHiker and the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge!
I’ve got a few words of advice for Mt Wilson. First, this is a hot time of year to hike Wilson, and being the lowest peak of the six, it gets even hotter than the others. Plan to start as early as possible.
Second, this trail is notorious for gnats and other flying pests this time of year. An inexpensive mosquito headnet would be a worthwhile purchase. I hiked this back in May and started early and didn’t have any issues, but most of the recent hike logs report lots of bugs.
There is poison oak on the trail. It’s not difficult to avoid as long as you stay on the trail and keep an eye out for the occasional errant branch that’s creeping out.
And finally, if you’re lucky enough to hike this on the weekend, check out the Cosmic Cafe at the top!
Have fun!

KeymasterI haven’t seen any post-monsoon reports from the trail. I look forward to hearing what you find out tomorrow!

KeymasterStarting out with a headlamp is fine, but be sure you know how to find the trailhead. The unpaved road to the trail isn’t very long, but it’s tricky to find. As long as you can do that, the first few miles of the trail are really easy to follow (i.e. no problem with a headlamp).

KeymasterYou can snag day-of permits, but the ranger station has to be open (they are closed Monday and Tuesday). Also, they don’t open until 8am (I think) so it means a later start. And there’s typically a line up on weekends that begins an hour (or more) before they open.
That being said, there are openings for alternative trailheads. Now that they’ve reopened some of the other trails, there are new options available.

KeymasterI don’t know about Brokeoff Mountain, but Lassen Peak has about 5 feet of snow at the trailhead (8,250′) as of 7/26/17. Are you knowledgeable, experienced and equipped for winter mountaineering?
Jeff H
KeymasterAye caramba! I wish there were an easier way to edit these… but you’ll have to email the added photos and/or any text changes to me: jeff@socalhiker.net
We hope to improve this for next year. Keep your fingers crossed! 🙂

KeymasterYep! I just emailed you instructions on logging your hikes. Do your best to select the actual date of your hike when you fill out the hike log form. 😉

KeymasterDid you have any shade on the road walk portion?
Road walking can be miserable. Road walking in bright sun on a hot day? Intolerable.

KeymasterWow! You hiked during one of the hottest months of the year. The TCT is very exposed. The ideal time to hike in my opinion is spring, with early fall a close second. 😉
And I agree–taking four days would be much more enjoyable. Still an awesome experience though.
