SoCal Hiker Goes Live (sort of)

February 1, 2010 By Jeff H 11 Comments

Anza-Borrego-155-300x225Welcome to SoCalHiker.net. I am a hiker and backpacker living in Southern California, and I’m here to share my favorite hikes and backpack trips. My focus will be primarily on local hikes, with some longer trips that may require a day of travel. I don’t profess to be an expert outdoorsman, but I do have many years of experience, and I’m willing to share what I know in the hope that you’ll share your knowledge and expertise in return. In my experience, hikers are a great bunch of people, and by sharing through our local hiking community, we all benefit.

On a personal note, this coming August I’ll be embarking on a significant backpacking trip, hiking the entire John Muir Trail — the “JMT” —  over 330 miles from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney over three weeks. A trip of this magnitude requires considerable training and planning, and I’ll be setting up an entire section devoted to the JMT. I successfully backpacked the JMT once before — back in 1980. This August will mark exactly 30 years from that first trip. A nice anniversary, don’t you think?

Best of luck on your JMT hike this year! It is impressive you did it 30 years ago.

I look forward to hearing more about your preparation for the trip.

Thanks, HL! We’ve got our permit reservation for a July 27th start date from LYV. Can’t hardly wait!

And I will be posting updates here at SoCalHiker. I’ve got to spiff the site up and finish up some writing now that people are stumbling across it.

I like your site design, did you do this yourself? Also I am excited to read your trip reports!

Thanks, Jeremy. The site design is built on top of WordPress. I started with the excellent Lifestyle theme from Studiopress, and modified it to give it the look I wanted. Even though I can (and have) designed my own themes from scratch, their Lifestyle theme makes a great starting point. Check it out.

Thanks, Traci! I am looking into the RSS problem. The link is correct, but for some reason the feed is not validating. Fun stuff…

Hey Marla! Didn’t we hike with Verdi to Sugarloaf off Ortega Highway?

Thanks for the kind words. I’m sure our hiking paths will cross again.
