USA TODAY’s Ten Best Hiking & Outdoor Blogs

September 3, 2014 By Jeff H 5 Comments

Best Hiking and Outdoor Blog Winners

Many of you know that SoCal Hiker was nominated for USA TODAY’s Reader’s Choice award for the ten best hiking and outdoor blogs. This morning, the final ten were announced and I’m thrilled to share that SoCal Hiker is in the top three!

I started SoCal Hiker when I was training and preparing for a thru-hike on the John Muir Trail. Back then, I thought it would be a great way to share my research, my training and planning, and maybe even inspire a few others to get on the trail. I never dreamed our detailed trail guide database would grow to cover day hikes and backpacking trips from San Diego to Santa Barbara… and beyond.

What really moves me is the community of SoCal Hikers that has sprung up. People like me who love outdoor adventure, exploring new trails, or just getting dirt under their feet. Your participation in the community — your trail reports, feedback, questions and encouragement — are what make SoCalHiker one of the best hiking and outdoor blogs out there today.

So thank you for making your voice heard, and for being a part of what makes the Southern California outdoor scene so special.

If you’re new to SoCal Hiker, here’s how you become part of this community.

The key to being a part of the community is to join in. Leave a comment. Share your own experience. Dive in!

When you love what you do it shows. People you meet along the way recognize that good energy and are happy to support you. Glad we met hiking with SMMOC a couple years ago.

We had a group of 18 from IVC that hiked Laguna Canyon at Nix this morning, and I was thinking of you and your blog. It is so great to have a group to hike with again. My other hiking buddies seem to have all moved to Colorado.

Glad you are getting the recognition you deserve.

Congratulations on the award! My wife and I write our own outdoor blog with all original photography: https://backobeyond.blog. Check it out and let us know if you ever make it out to Arizona. There is some great wilderness out here to explore.

About SoCal Hiker

Jeff on Mount Rainier

I created SoCal Hiker while preparing to thru-hike the John Muir Trail. My goal? Create guides for the best hiking and backpacking trails with enough detail to make it an enjoyable experience for you. And while I started with trails in Southern California, I’ve expanded across the west. We hike each trail to create these guides, sharing practical advice on gear and outdoor skills. Read more…
