Peak Mt Wilson
Group The gruesome two-some
Trailhead Sierra Madre

A buddy and I decided to this hike top down then back up to catch the sunset. We hiked down to the Chantry Flats trailhead and took the the lower trail back up through the switch backs. Perfect weather to enjoy a six pack of Saint Archers White Owl Ale. Found a variety of mushrooms and fungi. I wish I took more photos but I’ll be better about from here on. I’ll tell you what though, doing it backwards sure made that ascent harder on my legs, but hey, well worth every step. 5 more to go!

  1. Hiking for the sunset is a great way to add some variation to the Six-Pack of Peaks, and of course…those sunsets!

Alex, do you know anything about foraging mushrooms and which are actually safe to eat? I’ve always been curious about that, but afraid of eating something deadly.

  2. Hey There Jeff! Appreciate what you’ve started! I know a fair amount about what is edible. For the most part I carry a book with me to reference. I don’t eat wild plants often, it’s mostly a hobby. The book I reference is called “Edible wild plants.” it’s the same book featured in the book/movie “into the wild”.

  3. Alex, didn’t Chris McCandless die from eating some plants he shouldn’t have?

I used to be really interested in foraging when I was younger and I’ve got a book about edible plants in the Sierra Nevada. Need to pull that out and dust it off!
