Peak San Gorgonio
Group Girls Who Hike LA
Trailhead Vivian Creek Trailhead

This was the big one … and we did it! This was a trip loaded with firsts – first time backpacking, first time above 11,000 feet (airplanes don’t count), first time sleeping outdoors in 14-degree weather anywhere, and first time completing the SoCal 6 Pack! To say the least, we felt pretty excited and pretty accomplished.
Considering the distance, we weighed the pros and cons of trying to do San G in a day versus backpacking San G. So glad we decided to backpack. We had 40 lb packs (neither of us has ultralite gear) but we took our time and really enjoyed the scenery, some rock climbing, and took a lot of pictures. We had permits to camp at the summit but got surprised by my hiking partner, Elise, getting a migraine at the tree line and made the tough decision to camp below the summit by a half mile. The night was frigid cold with high winds. It felt like the longest night of my life. I found myself praying, “Please Lord, just let the morning come soon.” By morning Elise was better. We had a beautiful sunrise from our camping spot and headed to the summit shortly after. Victory!
The hike wasn’t how we planned but it was how it was suppose to be: Full of friendship and joy in the journey. I’d do it again … when it’s warmer.
