We started the hike at 6:15. Weather was cool, clear; 10 minutes light sprinkle as we approached the peak; no wind. Unfortunately I was weak and slowed to avoid cramps, reaching the peak around 3. This surprised me, since a couple of weeks earlier I hiked Cucamonga easily – roughly the same elevation gain and distance. Hurrying down, my lower back became weaker and more painful and my gait unsteady. Required a snail’s pace and frequent stops lying down; finished way after dark.
Later, when paying for a hamburger, I discovered that I did not have my wallet; not certain that I had brought it. Next morning I realized the worse and began to trace my wallet use, cancelling credit cards and that I have lost medical records, driver’s license. Dreading that task.
Attempting to call the ranger – line busy – REI called – HIKER BEN HAD FOUND MY WALLET – REI gave me his number. Ben saw my REI card, called REI, and REI called me. We arranged to meet in Big Bear later that afternoon – a 120 mile drive for me gladly done.
Amanda and Ben, a young couple from the east coast, were backpacking and climbing in S. Cal. They passed me, when I was resting at High Creek, on their way to an overnight at the peak. Amanda saw my wallet lying in the middle of the trail, probably where I first lay down to rest.
They refused any money but gladly accepted my offer of a great meal at The Captain’s Anchorage. ( A welcome change from their camping meals.) We had a pleasant talk sharing our hiking experiences.
Thank you Trail Angels Amanda and Ben – I hope our paths cross again. Amanda for seeing the wallet and Ben for the thought of calling REI.
