Trailhead Angelus Oaks

Despite the fire happening near Big Bear and the heat wave, we hit the trail at 5:30 to beat the heat! The trail was relatively cool and breezy all the way to the top (70º.) Today was not only the Summer Solstice, but also… World Naked Hiking Day. We did see one ‘buff’ dude on the trail, tan lines will be interesting. Good for him! This trail was a tough and immediate uphill start for me, I needed a slower warm-up to a mountain — following the faster pace of my hiking partner, lesson learned. Once in my own groove, it was very doable, and would be even more so without high temps! Spent about an hour at the summit, no one else was there for at last 1/2 hour, so I decided to do a little bit of WNHD celebration with a quick ‘topless at the top’ shot. LOL

As we decended (left at 12:30 pm) the temps as we figured would start to rise, and if weren’t for the nice breezes and shade of the trees I would have probably used all of my 3 liters of water. The spring was running pretty good and cold – a refreshing stop to soak my bandana for the rest of the trip down.

The bugs were most pesky in both directions around the lower pine shady areas. Bug net and spray advisable.
