A hike to San Bernardino Peak seems to always be straightforward: long and steady. This year, I did not think I would beat my record time last year but I did by 6 minutes. However, I feel like it was more work for me to hike fast this year than last year but I am still grateful to be able to hike such distance. I can definitely see how much difference cross training makes as I did more last year than this year.
As far as company, I hiked with two other people: my friend whose longest hike ever was San Bernardino and a member of the Girls Who Hike LA who was so fast I had the constant challenge to go fast throughout the hike. I like challenges since they force me to do things my lazy self would otherwise not do given that if I take on a challenge, I WILL finish it no matter what. That mentality has helped me make hiking a regular part of my life for the past couple of years.
