Trailhead Icehouse Canyon

We have been waiting and waiting for the snow to clear so that we could continue on our quest to hike the 6 Peaks! We arrived at Icehouse Canyon on Sunday around 7:30 a.m. and the lot already full. We were lucky that we found parking still down the street a bit. We snagged one of the last permits in the box and began our hike. It was nice by the creek, but already warmer than we thought it would be, and we quickly shed layers.

We leap-froged a few other groups on the way to Icehouse Saddle. There we found many groups taking a break before moving on. For the amount of people in the lot and on the first part of the hike, it didn’t feel too busy on the rest of the trail. Sure we made “friends” with a few groups – but we still found some peace and tranquility as we climbed.

We were very thankful for the wind that had kicked up as it provided much relief from the sunny and steep portions of the trail as we ascended to the top. The summit was busy, but we didn’t have to wait long to take our picture on the famous protruding rock, and because of the size of the summit, we could find a nice spot to rest and eat that didn’t seem too crowded.

The hike down was fine; and we were glad to get back to the shade of the forest at the saddle. There was a rattle snake at the saddle, but it was under some of the downed trees and didn’t bother us. We continued down back toward the creek. That is when we were overcome with the swarming Lady Bugs! We had seen a few blog posts about this – but wow! They were everywhere, on our clothes, face, hats – and trying to get in our ears, mouths and eyes. The rocks were RED with even more Lady Bugs just “sitting around”. It was amazing! We were saying if it was anything other than Lady Bugs we would not be so calm – and even with it being Lady Bugs we were ready to get past them.

A little further, there was another rattle snake that went over the path and into the rocks. So they are out and about – keep your eyes open.

We were thrilled to have completed Peak #2 – and can’t wait to get going onto the others as the snow continues to melt!
