Started hike at approximately 9am with temps in high 30s to low 40s, conditions were excellent with plenty of fresh powdery snow.
Microspikes were fine up until a little after the Sid Davis trail split, since conditions between Wellmans and the Peak had avalanche warning our group took the Sid Davis route. I understand there were three rescued that had taken the route up from Wellmans.
The route up Sid was a nice powder and we did just fine with snow shoes, and very little wind but as we made our approach to the peak the wind was much stronger which made for an exciting summit. There was some ice just before the summit but we felt comfortable getting enough traction with our snow shoes and poles.
The hike back down just as challenging as going, lots of sliding down on snow shoes but fun.
Love seeing it with all the snow up there! I did San Jacinto last year about the same time, and loved it.
I like that you assessed the avi danger and took a safer route.
By the way, Lori, you’re the first challenger to log a hike up San Jacinto for 2017! Congratulations!
Thanks Jeff, this is my first time joining the challenge…Wilson on Saturday 🙂
Awesome job Lori !! We got Wilson this Saturday:)
