Trailhead Angeles Oaks - San Bernadino

Day two of an incredible, cold, fall hike from Angeles Oaks to Forest Falls via two fantastic peaks. Day two started at Dollar Lake Saddle where we’d camped after summiting San Bernadino. It was a very cold night but we were warm in our down sleeping bags. How cold was it? I’m not really sure but the inside of our tent was heavily frosted – the moisture from our breathing froze on the metal tent poles. We had a breakfast of coffee and oatmeal while waiting for the air to warm and the sun to rise. By 9 a.m. it was warm enough to move and we broke camp and headed for San Gorgonio some three a half miles away. Sunday was much warmer than Saturday but we still wore hats, gloves and wind protection. We summited early, well before noon and ran into only a couple of small parties on the summit. From here it was a long slog down to the trailhead were we found our car. If I ever do these peaks again I’ll certainly do them as a two day trip. The continuous high altitude hiking along the ridge between the peaks was the best I’ve ever hiked in California aside from the trails on Whitney.
