I have done this hike a couple of times now and it remains to be my favorite So Cal hike. We got an early morning start so we could prepare ourselves for hiking the first 5-6 miles of Mount Whitney in the dark the following week, which consequently was the reason for undergoing this challenge. The nice thing about Deer Springs Trailhead is that you can do a loop and see this beautiful mountain in its entirety–every part of this hike is spectacular! I highly suggest hanging out in Idyllwild before heading home.
