Trailhead Chantry Flats

Our adventure began with the challenge of parking on the road below Chantry Flats. After much negotiation, we wedged into a spot and hit the trail at 0700. The five “Safari Sistas” followed the Gabrielino Trail along the river. It’s a great year to see it with all the water! After a rest at Camp Sturtevant, the Sistas climbed the relentless Sturtevant Trail. Thankfully, it was a beautiful day of sunshine, but temps only in the 70s. The new-comers to our group couldn’t believe that there would be a café at the top serving pie, among other things. I was not disappointed when we finally reached the top and saw a gorgeous APPLE PIE in the café window. After a nice long rest, we started down via Winter Creek trail and picked up a nice fellow hiker and her dog, Abby, along the way. Down, down, down we walked until we finally reached the split to Upper Winter Creek trail. It’s a bit longer, but we avoided that long slog back up the paved road to Chantry Flats. Upon reaching the picnic area, we could hear live music and smell BBQ – although it was very tempting to sit and have a beer or two, we carried on to the car where we enjoyed some cold fresh strawberries and cleaned off the trail dust. Our Navigator Sista, Janice, was in charge of finding the closest McDonald’s for a cold drink and salty fries after our long hike. She did not disappoint! We all were pretty tired and decided that we needed more practice hikes on Dreaded Hill in Whiting Ranch. Until the next one…..Hike On!
