Peak San Bernardino
Group N/A
Trailhead Angeles Oaks

Decided to do San Bernardino as an overnight, hiking a short evening to Limber Pine Bench, camping there, and then summiting early the next morning. Minimal snow below Limber Pine, trail was in great condition. We had perfect weather, with a calm, clear night. LP is a great flat area to camp, with awesome vantage points for sunset. The next morning woke up at 5am and headed up the last 2 miles to the summit. Wore crampons the full way up and down between Limber Pine and the peak. Ice axes not needed, pretty easy going. The snow below Washington Monument made for a nice shortcut, we just shot straight down the slope back to camp, probably saved around 1/2 mile or so. Great time all around!

  1. Awesome! I did an overnight at Limber Pines last year when I hiked San Bernardino. We got torrential rain all the way up to Limber Pines, then hail and freezing temps. The morning hike up to the summit and back down the weather was absolutely beautiful.

I’d love to do this some time in the snow.

  2. What is the water situation like towards the top? I read there is a spring at Limber Pine but hikers shouldn’t count on it. Did you pack all your water in or were you able to fill up at or near camp? Cheers!

  3. Hey Paul,

We packed our water in. I think I took about 4.5 Liters in total. I was also hiking in a very cool time of year so it was easier to conserve water not being super hot or dehydrated. That was enough for me getting to Limber Pines, boiling a cup for dinner, and still have about 2.5 liters for the next morning and hike out.

I know there is water up there in theory, when we went it was covered in snow so couldn’t access it, but I’m not sure what the status of those running sources would be this time of year.

But it’s an awesome place to camp and definitely recommend it, even if you just take a bit more weight and pack the water in. Enjoy!

  4. Has anyone camped at Limber Pines recently? I’m going to be doing a 3 day, 2 night trip with a small group over Labor Day weekend and would love to know how much water I should be carrying up. TIA!
