Trailhead ICE HOUSE CANYON

Great to be retired and able to hike during the week and avoid the weekend crowds. Especially this trail, with long stretches of a 1 ft. wide path along steep slopes, where it’s impossible to pass. Arrived at Ice House trailhead 6AM; about 6 cars in the lot. Shortly afterward, two hikers arrived and started up (never saw them again, so they did not go to Cucamonga Peak). Started hike at 6:15. One hiker briefly passed me about halfway to the saddle, otherwise I hiked alone all the way to the peak, meeting near the summit, that hiker and two others returning. No one was at the summit when I arrived , but about 10 arrived while I was there and I met probably 20 more climbing on my return by 3PM.

An enjoyable, clear, unrushed hike. Despite the current heat wave, I never sweat the entire hike. Trail was easy to follow and in good condition except where “idiots” cut switch backs of the narrow trails along the steep slopes, requiring some care in passing. The “idiots” break the edge when they start the cut and their debri floods the trail at the end, both narrowing the trail. I spoke with trail crew that had been on the trail for two days – primarily repairing that damage.
