Peak Mt Wilson
Group Hike Beyond the Hills
Trailhead Bailey Canyon

So I finally got around to starting the 6 Pack this year. Better late than never. I’ve been busy hiking, but haven’t hit any of the 6 Pack.

We went up from Bailey Canyon, not the usual route and a nice change of pace.

Up to Jones Peak and then up the use trail up and over a couple of bumps to Hastings Peak and then down and steeply up the trail to the Mt. Wilson Toll Rd. Grabbing on to the wire rope for the last few yards.

Then it was a slog up the rock and boulder strewn Toll Rd and finally onto the trail again to the summit.

It was a beautiful day. No snow, just pitiful remnants tucked in the shadows here and there. But it was a little chilly at the top, mid 30s. Cool enough to put a jacket on, but not uncomfortable. Unfortunately the view was obscured, but you can’t have everything.
We went down the Old Mt. Wilson trail rather than go back the way we came which made for a nice loop.

With the recent rains we had the unexpected treat of a waterfall and rushing stream crossing the trail between Manzanita Ridge and Orchard Camp and we say and heard water flowing throughout the hike. Quite a change from past trips.

We elected to not take the newly marked use trails back to Jones Saddle and hence Bailey Canyon and instead continued down the Mt. Wilson trail to the trailhead at Mira Monte and walked back to Bailey Canyon Park.

This is a nice route and a great change of pace, but I recommend it when it is cool or overcast. It would be exposed when it’s warmer and might be a less pleasurable stroll.

  1. Hey James!

Michael and I did the same route / loop last Saturday. It was a tough route but very rewarding and a lot of fun. I think you definitely had cooler weather than we did, LOL!! Nice cairn! 🙂

  2. It was a fun hike Jeff. I enjoyed it. Nowhere near as nice as the Rim trail, but I liked it more than the Mt. Wilson trail and much more than any route out of Chantry Flats.

Yeah. That’s my cairn. I succumbed to my obsession.

Richard, I was supposed to hike it with you guys. But I flaked and bought my wife a car instead. Believe me, I’d have rather been hiking with y’all.
