SAN BERNARDINO PEAK Where have you been?!!!! This has been the most beautiful hike out of the 6 packs, well 5, I still have San G to go. I am still amazed at it’s beauty. You start up the trail, then the switchbacks began, not bad. After a couple miles the trees and trail open up to this magnificent view of Manzanitas…they look like a green plush blanket laying over the valley. There are giant boulders as well scattered throughout the valley. If you keep your eyes open, you may spot some wildlife. I saw a deer bedded down off the trail under a shaded tree. It appeared to be a spike. You do reach a flowing creek. I drank a liter of it unfiltered and didn’t get sick. It was cold and fresh water. After the water crossing you began to climb again, switchbacks here we come. I had to stop many times to take in that view, I could not believe how that beautiful country was so close to home and i had no idea until now. You will come up to the Washington monument, hike into that areas away from the trail, there you will find the pile of rocks and the rock bench. You;re almost there, 1/2 mile you will come to a Y, to the right you will see rocks layed accross it, as if advising “do not enter” but this is the correct path to the peak, in a short hop and a skip you will find yourself at the Peak! This Peak is a MUST! We ate the Summit, rested for 1 hour and took short rests along the way, we made it in 12 hours. Get your permit ahead of time so you can start early. We started at 0830 and returned at 2030, almost dark, 2 in our group came back a little later and had their headlamps on due to the dark night. ENJOY! Pictures do not do justice.
