Trailhead Upper Winter Creek Trail

We started off at the Upper Winter Creek Trailhead at about 7am. It was a cloudy day with slight drizzling and thick low clouds. The hike started out easy enough. We decided to go via the firebreak trail I read about. It’s where there is a water catcher that looks like a flying saucer from below. Bad Idea! It turned out to be a whole lot of up and down 8-9 peaks before meeting up with the Winter Creek Trail again. It delayed our ascent by a couple of hours. There were moments when some dense low clouds set in and you could not see 10 feet in front of you. We made it to the observatory at the top shortly after 1. After a short break at the top, some clouds set in again and brought a really eerie feeling since it was dead quiet and all white. The descent was much easier, but my legs were killing me by then. All in all the 7 hour hike turned out to be a 9.5 hour hike for us because of the firebreak trail. It was a fun hike. I probably wouldn’t do it again, but at least now it’s checked off the list! 🙂
