Trailhead Icehouse Canyon

Well we (Lynne, John Petersen and Raul Gil) started at 6:30 am hiking towards the peak, we had over 22 liters of water as we were going to camp at the top to enjoy the wonderful views we saw on you tube. On the way we saw a beautiful Pacific Rattlesnake crossing the trail and it voiced it’s opinion of us reaching it’s personal boundary (not to be confused with getting too close, as we were careful to maintain a safe distance). We got to the saddle at about 11:00 am and stopped for about an hour for a well needed rest in the 90 degree heat. We were pondering on whether to camp at Kelly’s Camp or go to the summit to camp and we decided to camp at the top to see the wonderful views of San Bernardino at night. It was a rough last mile but we did it in the heat and the reward was seeing all the beautiful lights of the city below once the sun set was fantastic. The only thing that was a challenge at the end was running low on water. We had 6 liters to get down the mountain to the spring and the summer weather takes its toll with water. But we were able to replenish at Columbine Spring, which the water was so fresh you did not need a filter. The best part of this hike was the cheeseburger and cold beer at the Mt. Baldy Lodge, to wind down a couple notches after a wonderful overnight hike. On to the next destination….Mt. Baldy. We’ll see you there, game on!!
