  1. Great Job Dave! Did you use crampons? Was the snow level still deep for snowshoes as to prevent post-holing? How was the trail from the saddle wrapping beneath Bighorn… Excuse all the questions… just might follow your tracks… Thx

  2. Hey David,

I wrote up a full trail report about it in my log, but for some reason it seems it didn’t post… weird.

At any rate, I didn’t use snowshoes, but definitely advise crampons and ice axe. I used them all the way from Icehouse Saddle to the peak. Wrapping around Bighorn is the trickiest part in my opinion, since it’s a lot of steep slopes that require edging, and it’s slick in spots. I left early in the morning so the snow was in pretty good shape going up and back down, I hit the summit at 10:50am.

Once at the saddle between bighorn and cucamonga, I just went straight up, keeping to the left (east) of the ridge. It’s a good workout for sure 🙂 go slow and step carefully and you should be good!

    Have a great hike!

    Dave

  3. Dave, did you actually wrap around beneath Bighorn from saddle to saddle? Giovanni stated that he did not see any trail so instead he went straight up to Bighorn, etc. If so, I could imagine a good deal of edging and yes “blazing trail.” Just wondering cause the trail beneath Bighorn has definite steep slopes…

  4. Yep just hugged the edge and traversed. I did see tracks that looked like they led up Bighorn, but in the interest of time I just stayed as close as I could to maintaining Saddle elevation. Given the wind and freeze-thaw conditions I’m sure my tracks were obliterated within a day…

There certainly were instances where going up would have helped alleviate the pitch of the slope so it wasn’t such a gnarly edge but again, was trying to be quick and direct and limit my time on long runout slopes.

I’ll try and remember to grab a screenshot of my GPS track if that is of any use to you…

  5. Appreciate the continued info Dave… I’ve decided to wait until the snow melts a bit more… don’t have the physical stamina, especially patience to be focused on technical aspects given current snow conditions on the trail…

Hey, continue to enjoy future hikes!!!
