Trailhead Chantry Flats

I drove all the way up to chantry flats from San Diego and arrived at 7:30 AM. The parking lot and sides of the road were already full of cars. I was able to find a clear a spot on the side of the road about 2 miles from the trailhead. It was a chilly 40° but The sky was clear and it was a beautiful day for a hike. I started on the Gabrielino trail head and took the detour to Sturtesvant Falls. The client to the summit was strenuous and not very scenic. I had a couple of false starts and had to backtrack. That was signage at the trail junctions but they could be clearer. There were great views at the summit. The roads were pretty well marked for hikers to find their way to the parking lot and the Winter Creek trailhead for the way down. There was a nice resting spot called the Cosmic Canteen. It’s closed until April, but there was a table set up with hot coffee available, plus a place to fill up your water bottles. The Winter Creek trail was more scenic than the one coming up. Overall it was a very challenging hike. I’ve hiked up Mount Baldy a few times, but that never seemed as tough as Mount Wilson was.
