Trailhead | Manker Flat/Baldy Bowl/Ski Hut Trail |
I “soloed’ this hike, but really, no one hikes Mt. Baldy solo on a Saturday! I used the “Register Ridge” route, which is my favorite, and I actually had the trail to myself most of the way up to the intersection with the Devil’s Backbone Trail. The weather was sunny and clear, with a sharp breeze to keep things cool and remind me that fall has arrived. This route used to be a bit of a secret, but now enough people use it that there is a distinct use trail that apparently goes all the way to the top of Mt. Harwood. However, all the times I’ve hiked it I seldom see anyone else. Today I actually saw three people coming down the route. Not something I would do. After summiting, I hiked down the Devil’s backbone to the Notch, and took the ski lift down. All in all, a beautiful day of hiking, and when I got back to my car I found I had managed to park in the only shaded spot on that side of the road.
