A Fool’s Hike

Our April Fool’s hike was none other then the infamous San Jacinto Peak. Originally we planned on starting out on the Marion Mountain Route, which is the normal trek I take. However, the rangers had informed us that a number of the lower elevation trailheads were still closed due to avalanche risk. We knew the hike to the summit of San Jacinto would take time since we would be traversing our own way up the mountain. We chose to take the Aerial Tramway from Palm Springs to start off our hike. There was no easy path to follow to the top of San Jacinto since all the trails were covered in snow. We made our way toward Miller Peak to avoid the very steep face that leads to San Jacinto and then traversed along the ridgeline to the summit. A crowd of people developed while we were at the top. On the way down we took the opportunity to glissade down the steep slopes, which was the most exciting part of the hike. It was a great day with perfect weather for an April Fool’s Day summit!
