Damon, I sent emails to you and your son with coupon codes weeks ago. Did you get any of the update emails that I posted?

Hi Linda! If you’re trying to log hikes for the 2018 challenge, you’re on the wrong site. You need to head over to our sister site, https://socialhiker.net — that’s where we are hosting all the hike logs this year (and future years, too).

John, what’s your username on SocialHiker.net? That’s where you log your hikes. Let me know and I’ll look-up your registration.

Hey George! Your campsite reservations are still good choices for the new route. Blackjack is really the only viable choice for the end of the first day of hiking. The new route is a little shorter, which makes it MUCH more enjoyable (the old route was brutal).

From Blackjack to Little Harbor to Two Harbors is also do-able (my wife and I did it) but it is a LONG day. The route here has changed a little bit, but the distance is about the same.

Hiking to Parsons Landing for the third night is perfect. The “old” TCT route officially ended at Starlight Beach — about 4.5 miles west of Parsons — but you still had to hike all the way back to Two Harbors and that wasn’t counted in the official mileage. The new route drops the detour to Starlight and the official end is now Two Harbors, so the total mileage of the trail is the total mileage you’ll hike.

Parsons was my favorite place to camp — just be sure to leave the next morning early enough to return to Two Harbors in time for your ride back to the mainland.

    Hey Grayson! Welcome to SoCalHiker!

I’m not sure what “loop” you’re referring to up Mt San Jacinto. Most of the routes are an out-and-back. One of my favorite overnight options is taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up, then hiking to Round Valley to camp for the night. On the second day, wake up and summit San J and head back down.

Here’s my detailed guide to that route: http://socalhiker.net//hiking-mt-san-jacinto-via-the-palm-springs-aerial-tram/

When you read that, you’ll see a link to the permit application down near the bottom of the guide.

Note that wilderness permits are also required for day hikes up San Jacinto, but they are free and don’t need to be reserved in advance. For day hikes, you can stop at the ranger station in Long Valley and fill out a permit. It’s super easy.

Hi Teresa and Allison! Yes, there will be a SoCalHiker Team again in 2018!

The folks over at The Heroes Project haven’t opened up registration yet, but when we do, we’ll get the team started and get going on sign-ups.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, June 3!

    Hi Michael!

Your Welcome Packet was mailed on 2/12 via USPS (shirts and hats ship separately). Should be arriving any day now.

The hike logs and challenger area for the 2018 challenge are all over on our sister site: SocialHiker.net. Head over there and you’ll find the challenger-only area, the hike log form, and you can browse all the hike logs submitted so far (over 300!).

    Happy Trails!

Hi Yvette! No, this year, we’ve switched over to using SocialHiker for all hike logs.

SoCalHiker is still a great community and resource for trail guides, but with the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge growing beyond the bounds of SoCal, we needed to find a more suitable “home” for the various challenges. And SocialHiker was born!

The cool thing, is that when you take a trip to do the NorCal Six-Pack of Peaks, ALL your badges are displayed on one profile. 🙂

Hey everyone, New to the site, and first time attempting the “Six Pack of Peaks” this year. I can only get out every other weekend to do some training hikes with my schedule the way it is right now. Do any of you have some recommendations or tips on training I can do in the gym that will help me prepare?

The best recommendation I can provide is to get out and hike.

Before I hiked the Six-Pack of Peaks with my girlfriend, we did local hikes in Orange County, increasing the distance until we were doing double-digit mileage (10+ miles in a single hike). That way you already know your body can cover the milage. If possible, work in hills. They don’t have to be super high elevation, but some good vertical gain (up and down is fine). Griffith Park or Crystal Cove State Park are both good places where you can work in 10+ miles and some pretty good climbs.

Once know you can handle that over 3-4 consecutive weekends, you’re ready to tackle Mount Wilson.

    Hi Jeff,

I am able to login to my profile with no issues. Are others experiencing this same issue?

Thank you and Happy New Year!

    Dave

Dave, the hike logs and registration for the 2018 challenge (and all future challenges) are on the new SocialHiker.net site. Your user account was migrated, but not the passwords. You will have to request a password reset.

    Here’s where it gets tricky.

We have multiple reports from folks with Microsoft email accounts (Hotmail, Outlook mail, etc.) that they are NOT receiving any emails from SocialHiker — including their password reset email. We’re working to resolve this, but until then, just let me know and we can manually reset it.

And yes, you will get a “new” profile on the new site. In fact, you’ve already got one: https://socialhiker.net/members/dvalino/profile/
