When will snow and/or rain become a factor on SB or SJ Peaks?

I've got a hiking bug and I'd like to get in as many weekends as possible hiking San Jacinto or San Bernadino peaks before the weather becomes an issue. Since I have zero experience with snow, I'd like to know when it becomes an issue. There are permits still available for October that I'm thinking of applying for. But when does it become pointless? Also, are there folks who still hike in the snow that will allow someone to get experience? I would never want to do a dangerous trail like Mt. Baldy in the snow, but I have heard that San Jacinto is doable. Even still, I wouldn't want to do a trail like that solo.
