Trail is pretty well defined given the season, however from Manzanita flats to the peak its very icy. A few dry spots that may temp you to take off micro spikes but leave them on as its spotty. Great hike and trail is not to aggressive… love it!

Thanks for the trail report, Edward.

I love this hike. Not many people do it unless they’re hiking the Six-Pack of Peaks, but many of those who do have told me this was one of their favorites.

Anyone know what the conditions of the trail are now? I’m planning to hit it on Saturday.

Hi Justin, did you do San Bernardino Saturday? I’d love to know the conditions. Thank you.

Went up Sunday, 2 -3 miles before the peak, you’re going to need cramp-ons or spikes. It is icy / hard packed snow. Very do able, but have the right gear with you. Make sure you have your permit with you, Rangers are out checking.

Sorry, I just saw this. I did summit on the 17th with yaktrax and poles. However, it was very hard work the last couple of miles. I would highly recommend at least microspikes.

Did this one last Saturday (5/28). Only small patches of snow. No crampons or microspikes required. There was a pretty good amount of people out, I think some were scouts out there doing trail maintenance. Perfect weather, got a little warm, but some clouds rolled in (just like the weather report said) and cooled it off pretty quick.

Just hiked this Monday 6/6. Didn’t see snow or ice anywhere. Recent hot spell seems to have done it’s work, no traction/ice tools of any kind needed. Early start was great, as by the time I was coming down the sun as pretty brutal.

It re-opened last September. The trail beyond the peak is still closed.

I just backpacked San Bernardino Peak from Angelus Oaks this holiday weekend. Good water flow at the spring just after Limber Pine Bench. Temps were nice but the wind made for an almost sleepless night. Wish I could stand sleeping with earplugs. Other than that it was perfect conditions!

This is great feedback. Two friends and I are going up on Sunday. Report was the trail is closed, but I’m grateful for our forum to get the most current and reliable information on trails. Thanks!

Does anyone know if they offer walk up permits for day hike? Would love to hike San Bernardino Peak via Angelus Oaks trail head this weekend if possible. Thank you!

They do. This site has the information: http://sgwa.org/wilderness-permits/permit-availability/. The ranger station opens at 8 and from what it says there is a line and permits go quick. Good luck!
