I just hiked Mt San Jacinto last Saturday, Nov 18 on the Marion Mountain trail and encountered pink stuff on nearby boulders, trees and plants about 2.5 miles into the ascent (around the 8,500 ft mark). Any idea what this is? Has someone put it there or it it some kind of parasite?

That does not look like anything naturally occurring. Do you have a larger version of the photo?

About a month ago or so a couple had the “greatest idea in the world” and did a gender reaveal in Icehouse Canyon! They proceeded to spread blue powder all over the rocks and the stream, then posted on Instagram and then refused to clean up once they got caught. I bet you this is the same type of stuff. It’s a powder that is supposed to be harmless, the kind that is used at Color Runs. In my opinion, it is not harmless to the environment and what happened to Leave No Trace anyways! Sad…

Thanks, Isabelle, it looks like some lucky hiker is having a baby girl soon!

    Jeff,
Due to size limitations I had to compress the photo from its original size. In any event, it looks like Isabelle solved the mystery. It just seemed odd that someone would go through the trouble; the pink stuff is spread out on the trail for over a quarter mile, and also way off the trail that would require some scrambling.

The consensus in the SoCal Hikers Facebook Group was that it’s phos-check — a fire retardant.
