Hiking San Bernardino

I'd like to hike San Bernardino this Saturday. Is it possible to get a day hike permit in time? Do I really need one? Also, we were wanting to camp somewhere around the base Friday night before we head up early Saturday morning. Is it possible to get a permit to do that at such short notice as well? Could we do it without a permit? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
