Hiking JMT in increments

Hi Everyone! My friend and I are looking to hike John Muir starting at soon as we can. However, the permit requires that we apply for the full permit 24 weeks in advance and they would not be until September. Has anyone done the JMT in one week hike increments? If so, how does getting the permits work if you decide to do them in one week increments?
