I read somewhere the trail to summit is closed after the Saddle. I can’t find trail report on Cucamonga Wilderness anywhere on Internet. Has anyone hiked CP in February? I’m leading a group and want to know if I should change the date for later in the season. Thanks!

Here’s a report from Jill G‘s log. She and a group hiked Cucamonga on 1/16. They wore microspikes to Icehouse Saddle, then switched to crampons. The traverse around Bighorn would be my biggest concern.

She can probably fill you in on the details.

Ultimately, it’s going to depend on weather and snow conditions. If you have fresh snow, you’ll be breaking trail and need to know how to navigate and read conditions. If the snow gets mushy, it can actually be worse because your footing is less sure.

Thank you, Jeff! This is very helpful. I may have to reschedule this hike later in the end of Spring or early Summer. My group has many novices and first time hikers, and I don’t think they will be comfortable to traverse a very technical mountain. I want to keep them hiking, not scare the crap out of them ?.

I hear you, CeCe. Last year I went up Icehouse Canyon with a group in May (MAY!!) with the intent of climbing Cucamonga. We hit a lot of snow (probably started the last mile to the saddle) and decided to forego Cucamonga in favor of Timber Peak.

Most people in the group didn’t even have microspikes, but the route to Timber had been pretty well tamped down by other hikers and it was not too bad. Still a fun hike and great to get into some snow.
