With the Lake fire forcing the closure of the San Gorgonio Wilderness, we’re picking two alternate peaks for 2015.
The first alternate is… Mt. Baden-Powell! This peak is not quite as high or as long as either San Bernardino or San Gorgonio, but it’s still a challenging climb and a great peak to add to your list. You can do the short-and-direct route that I describe in the link above, or take a longer route or even make a shuttle out of it.
This alternate is good for either San Bernardino or San Gorgonio — the two peaks currently off-limits due to the closure.
We are hopeful that both San Bernardino and San Gorgonio will be reopened at least partially by October 1st or possibly sooner. The trail to San Bernardino Peak from Angeles Oaks and the Vivian Creek trail to San Gorgonio were not actually inside the burn perimeter, but the rangers want to make sure the area is safe before reopening.
As for the second alternate, I’m working on that… stay tuned for an announcement later this month. 🙂
Good news — no second alternate (or first for that matter) will be needed!
The Angeles Oaks trailhead which leads to San Bernardino Peak has been reopened, as has the Vivian Creek Trail to San Gorgonio!
So you can do the “proper” Six-Pack of Peaks. Of course, this year since the closure forced some to hike elsewhere, if you hiked Baden-Powell that will still count as an alternate, but the good news is — you don’t have to!
I did Baden-Powell in June but am hoping to finish the original six by Oct. 15. If things don’t work out I will then log it as one of the six.
